Our approach to learning

Learning that is ambitious, practical and built around each child.

Our curriculum combines academic learning with practical and vocational experiences. We want every child to leave Hillside with meaningful qualifications, but also with the confidence, independence and everyday skills they will need beyond school.

Children study a broad range of subjects, with teaching adapted to their starting points, strengths and individual needs. Alongside core academic learning, children can take part in art, cooking, physical activity, forest school, animal care and other practical experiences. These are not simply breaks from learning – we aim to create valuable opportunities to develop communication, teamwork and problem-solving and responsibility.

We maintain high expectations whilst crucially recognising that children learn best when they feel safe, understood and able to trust the adults around them. Learning is therefore carefully structured but flexible enough to respond to each child. Progress is measured not only through qualifications and academic achievement, but also through engagement, confidence, relationships and readiness for their next stage of life.
